This bike is a piece of American racing history. Yamaha XS650--Shell 750 race bike.
The Shell frame and swing arm (#586) were purchased by Jim's Yamaha in Bakersfield in 1974.
We have not been able to prove that the bike was raced by Kenny Roberts but he was one of the racers attached to Jim's Yamaha in Bakersfield prior to moving up to team Yamaha.
The motor in this bike is a very early 1970 Yamaha 256 motor with a serial number of S650 000755
The Shell built motor is a full race 750 and is in "as raced" condition. The internals are just plain beautiful.
Shell rods, Shell cam, Hi-Comp pistons, Shell cam covers. Right hand shift set-up done by Shell's shop way back when.
There was no alternator cover on the bike when we got it and we went with a 1971 unit we got from a local racer.
The motor now has a set of new Mikuni round slide carbs installed with K&N filters.
The Mikuni carbs that were on this bike have certainly seen better days and are included with the bike. At this point they are perhaps good conversation pieces but nothing more than that.
When we did the engine testing on the motor we used a Pamco electronic ignition and a battery.
The thing roared like a monster!
The bike now has an Electrexworld crank driven racing ignition installed.
This is a race based ignition system and has no battery at all. However the original battery box from the total loss system is still on the bike.
It's a bump start or wheel start bike and has no remote starter access hole in the alternator cover.
The bike has the original Betor triple trees and Betor forks that were on the bike as well as the original KONI shocks in the rear.
Original Hurst/Airheart rear brake set-up is included but is non-functional.
It was replaced with a period correct Grimeca master cylinder and rear brake caliper.
The rear wheel does have a newer style brake disc installed on it at this time.
Original Boranni and Akront shouldered rims front and rear wearing new style dirt track tires.
The original Carlisle tires that were on the bike had very bad weather checking and were discarded.
Every effort has been made to keep this bike original and in as raced condition.
However, certain new items have been used like a new drive chain and new cables, Ect.
We did get some new Bates foot peg rubbers to replace the seriously beaten ones that were on the bike as well.
Original body work has been hand painted to replicate the Shell Racing Specialties paint scheme.
It still needs the lettering.
The bike is for sale for $15,000.00
