Healthy local bees from our local Whatcom County micro environment enhance your beekeeping success! Ordering bees shipped from other environments can be risky. Damage from shipping and handling, temperature and handling related loss in transit and dehydration in transit are but a few hazards when purchasing bees from non-local sources. Additionally, Western Washington winters are a unique and difficult micro environment to raise bees in. Long, windy, wet cold winters are very different from warmer, dryer winters in other US climates. Healthy stock adapted to local environmental conditions is your best chance of successful beekeeping! Ask any local beekeeper who has had success overwintering bees in Whatcom County for over 10 years, and you are likely to hear the same sage advice.
For more advanced bee keepers, my IPM (integrated pest management) system includes 60 day Swedish Sponges with 50g/50g of oxalic acid (OA) /vegetable glycerin applied twice; once in April and again in July. This year I also treated one round of OA vapor at Thanksgiving and one round of OA vapor on Dec 21. Aug 2025 mite counts per 1/2 cup (300) bees on sampled colonies were at "3" or lower with several "0" results. I have a mix of genetics in my colonies that I prefer to call Pacific Northwest Survivors.
Nucs include a mated queen, 3 frames of open and capped brood and 2 frames of food.
