Here we have a Sylvania SC841W (Model name: “Contemporary”) stereo console manufactured sometime in the 1950’s.
I gotta say, overall it’s in pretty great shape! I’ve included pics of the majority of the most noticeable damage on it.
Comes with a variety of original paperwork: the original owner’s manual, a Sylvania catalog which is how I found out the it’s model name is the “Contemporary” as well as what the original owner paid for it— $339.95 which in 1950 would be about $4,533 when adjusted for inflation today.
If you search on Etsy for it, someone sold this exact one for $1025. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I know that I don’t want as much for this one. :)
The Garrard turntable inside the console actually still works! Though, it does have an issue: it’ll play the entire side of a record. But, when it retracts back to the resting spot, it doesn’t rest, goes back out and drops around where a 7” would start. I don’t know how to fix it, but I’d be willing to bet that it’s not a hard thing to fix, even though it’s 75-ish years old. The amplifier inside is a Sylvania R12-1. I know this because…. It comes with THE SCHEMATIC to inform you how to fix the amp! Aintnoway any electronics manufacturer is going to do that in this age! The speakers sound warm! For the time period, I’m sure it was basically top of the line. I think it sounds nice & warm.
Even if you don’t want to use it, it’s still a gorgeous mid-century piece to have on display in your house.
I don’t know the weight, but… it’s heavy. You’re going to need a 2nd person to load it out and in. I unfortunately cannot help, as I have 3 herniated discs and my PT would kill me if they found out about me lifting it. :)
If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!
LOCATION: Old Town Bellingham near The Granary
PRICE: I’d like to see $175 for it (or...an interesting barter...) Definitely willing to negotiate. And if you have a collection of recent-modern vinyl (80’s and higher) collection, we can talk about trade-in values provided the music is in the veins I am looking for.
I’m also very willing to exchange video game items towards or even for it! I’m always looking for very early era video game systems. Atari, Commodore 64, Intelevision, Colecovision, Odyssey, PONG…. If you have anything like that, we can surely talk! Even new PC stuff or current generation video games
Another trade thing would be a road bike or cruiser in good shape, and would fit a 6”2 man.
OOO.... I'd trade even-up for a decent violin as well!!
Honestly, I mostly just want this thing gone, so I’m up for listening to any offers you might have!
Thanks so much, and have a great rest of the week!
